Robert L. Johnston, CPA
Chairman Emeritus, Johnston Harrington, P.C.
Robert "Bob" Johnston is the founder of Robert L. Johnston, P.C., the predecessor firm of Johnston Harrington, P.C.
After completing service in the U.S. Army, Mr. Johnston attended college and graduated with a major in accounting,
BBA, from West Texas State University in 1964. Started accounting career with one of oldest CPA Firms in Amarillo,
Texas in 1964 and obtained his CPA certificate in 1966.
In 1974, Mr. Johnston purchased an Accounting firm in old hometown of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and in 1976 merged
this firm with the largest CPA firm in Bartlesville, becoming Jones, Bryan & Johnston, P.C. During this time became
active in State CPA society serving as officer and director. At the firm held positions of Audit partner, tax manager
and managing partner.
A great change occurred in 1985 pertaining to what life was all about. The truth contained in the Bible began
governing his life. In 1986 he sold his interest in the CPA firm to the other two owners who were dedicated
Christian men and entered Bible College receiving a one year Bible Study Certificate. From Bible College he worked
with a Christian Television for two years before coming to Pearland, Texas and opening a new CPA office in 1990.
During this period of time he became convinced that God is the one who gives us clients to work with and we are
called to be shepherds for those that are brought to us. That is to say, we are to do all we can to make their life
easier by keeping them out of trouble and by guiding them with all the knowledge, wisdom and light that God has
given us. The best job we can possible do for our clients is to do our work as “unto the Lord”.
In 2004, he transfer his interest in his firm to Deron Harrington, someone he believes has the heart of a shepherd.
He remains involved with the business on a limited basis and serves as Chairman Emeritus of Johnston Harrington,
P.C.
Bob is somewhat of a history buff and during his time in Bible College he researched Christianity in America from
its founding. He discovered that America’s attitude about work and about owning businesses dramatically changed
over the years with each new generation not realizing that the change had occurred.
The attitude change can be categorized in the following time periods:
1776-1850 – The majority of the population believed they were here to
serve God and the purpose for work or business or other endeavors
was to serve God. The slogan was “One nation under God”. One
historian said that the American boy in the year of 1850 was closer
to the year 1 than to the year 1900”.
1850 -1950 – The majority of the population had become accustomed to
believing that the purpose of their work or business or other
endeavors was to serve their fellow men. The industrial revolution
meant “Better things for better living.” Companies existed for their
employees and customers. There was migration from farm to city.
1950 – present – The majority of the population believes that the purpose
of their work or business or other endeavors is to serve the
investors who have invested the money for their work or business
or other endeavors. No employee loyalty, era of stock options,
corporate greed and manipulation of profits.
Bob resides in Pearland, Texas with his wife of forty-six years. They have three children and five grandchildren.
